The basic safety training required for superyachts is known as Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). This safety training was developed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The full course initially comprised of four modules/certificates:

  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention
  • Elementary First Aid
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

The 2010 Manila amendments included the requirement for a fifth module focusing on Security Awareness. From 1st January 2014, all seafarers have required documentary evidence to confirm that they have been trained and certified in onboard security-related issues.

All five of these modules must be completed. They can be taken as individual courses or all five together, which takes some 5-6 days. Some vessels require additional safety and security training dependent on vessel type and registration status.

We strongly recommend therefore that newcomers to yachting complete the basic training before applying for any positions to enhance your prospects for employment.
